Data Visualization

Data visualization refers to representing data through graphical formats like charts, graphs, and maps to help people understand complex data sets and draw insights from them quickly and effectively. AEC firms may use data visualization to talk about specific projects. For instance, they may use charts and graphs to demonstrate a building’s sustainability metrics. Or they may use them to display metrics about their firm’s work - like showing project types, housing units, number of hospital beds, percentages of projects by market sector, etc.…

Things to consider when creating information graphics:

  • Keep it Simple - Ensure that the graphics are easy to understand. Avoid clutter and use clear labels, legends, and concise text to explain the visuals. Simplify complex data without losing essential details.

  • Garbage In, Garbage Out - Make sure your data inputs are accurate and focus on the most relevant data that supports the message you want to convey. Avoid including unnecessary information that can distract or confuse the audience. All infographics should be part of telling a compelling story.

  • Brand Consistency - Adhere to a firm’s brand guidelines (logos, color schemes, and typography) when creating information graphics that complement the rest of the collateral.

  • Tools and Software - Choose the right tools and software for creating high-quality graphics. Software like Tableau, Power BI, and Adobe Illustrator can help create professional and visually appealing infographics. Check out our Graphic Design Programs blog post for more info.

Example

Let’s look at a hypothetical construction company that specializes in hospitals. Compelling infographics might include:

  • Number of Hospitals Built: "50+ Hospitals Completed"—Visual: An icon of a hospital building with the number prominently displayed.

  • Years of Experience: "25+ Years in Hospital Construction" - Visual: Timeline showing milestones over the years.

  • Total Bed Capacity: "20,000+ Hospital Beds Delivered" - Visual: Bed icons accumulating to show total capacity.
